Early Life and Career
Raoul Dufy was born on June 3, 1877, in Le Havre, France, to Félix Dufy and Marthe Dufy. He had three siblings, two of whom would later become famous painters as well. Raoul attended the local art school and also received private instruction from an art teacher named Dureuil.
In 1898, Raoul Dufy started working in Marseille as an illustrator and designer for the Herald. He was soon hired as a fashion designer in Paris where he worked with the likes of Paul Poiret, a renowned fashion designer in the early 20th century.
It was during this time that he first developed an affinity for Fauvism, a French art movement marked by intense colors and non-naturalistic shapes. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Independants in 1902, and continued to do so throughout his career.
In 1913, after travelling extensively in Europe, Raoul Dufy settled in Paris. He started working at the famed Le Bateau-Lavoir, a studio and gathering place of avant-garde artists like Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris.
