The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is one of the most important military alliances in the world. Formed in 1949, the organization is made up of 29 different nations who are all committed to the protection of their members in times of war. Recently, however, the efforts to keep NATO united have been challenged by the actions of one member: Turkey. Turkey has pursued a number of controversial policies over the past few years that have put an immense strain on its relationship with other NATO countries.

This article will explore how Turkey’s actions have threatened the unity of NATO’s members and outline the steps that the alliance should take to restore the solidarity of all its nations.

Turkey’s Actions That Jeopardize NATO’s Unity

At the heart of the conflict between Turkey and its NATO allies is Turkey’s increasingly autocratic leadership. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s extreme and often unpredictable political style has caused a great deal of tension among member countries. Specifically, several of Erdogan’s policies have been seen as a direct threat to NATO’s shared security interests.

Military Hostilities with Greece

One of the biggest issues to arise out of Turkey’s increasingly defiant behavior relates to the ongoing military tensions between it and Greece. In recent years, Turkish forces have repeatedly infringed upon the sovereignty of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, leading to open conflict with Greek forces defending their territory. These confrontations are a major source of tension between two NATO members and have put a huge strain on the alliance’s ability to remain unified.

Relationship With Russia

Another major concern among NATO allies is Turkey’s increasingly cozy relationship with Russia. Rather than remain aligned with its NATO partners, Turkey has often chosen to side with Russia instead and has even purchased a large number of Russian-made missiles in recent years. This has led to some members accusing Turkey of being a Russian pawn, which has led to further alienation between the two sides of the alliance.

Involvement in Libya and Syria

Finally, Turkey has also become increasingly involved in the conflict in Libya and Syria, which has further strained its relationship with other NATO members. Turkey’s support for rebel forces in both countries has been seen as a direct violation of the NATO alliance’s pledge of non-interference in other nations’ affairs. In addition, its involvement has led to increased tension with certain NATO members, especially those in the Mediterranean region, who oppose its interference in the region.

How NATO Can Restore Unity

Despite the challenges posed by Turkey’s behavior, all is not lost for the NATO alliance. There are steps that can be taken by all 29 member states to restore the unity of the bloc and ensure that Turkey’s actions are not allowed to undermine the core principles of the organization.

Respond to Aggression

One of the most effective measures that NATO can take in response to Turkey’s aggressive behavior is to firmly and consistently respond to any provocations. The alliance should respond immediately to any hostile actions by Turkish forces, and make it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated.

Increase Diplomatic Pressure

Another key step that NATO can take is to increase the diplomatic pressure on Turkey. The alliance should make it clear that any further violations of its principles will have serious consequences and should engage in direct dialogue with Turkey to ensure that it is aware of its obligations as a NATO member.

Create a Task Force

Finally, NATO should consider creating a task force dedicated to handling the unique challenges posed by Turkey. This task force could be comprised of experts from all 29 member states and should be tasked with finding a way to resolve the tension between Turkey and its allies.

Turkey’s increasingly aggressive behavior has created an unprecedented level of tension within the NATO alliance. The organization’s members must take action to ensure that Turkey’s actions do not lead to its eventual expulsion from the alliance. This can be done by responding to any provocations, increasing diplomatic pressure on the country, and creating a dedicated task force to address the challenges posed by Turkey. Only by taking these steps can NATO hope to return to a state of unity and ensure that Turkey’s actions do not seriously damage the alliance.
